Reviews

Just got some new gear for running in the last couple months.
Figured since I like them, I would let people know about them.

Aftershokz Aeropex
I have 2 pair of Aftershokz Trekz that I have used for years.
They are starting to get to the point where they aren't lasting as long on runs and glitchy in playback so needed to get a new pair.
I also knew that the Trekz wouldn't last for my marathon distance, they are only rated for 6 hours and I expect it to go 6.5 hours.
The Aeropex is rated for 8 hours.

Amazon had a sale on the Aeropex so I decided to go for those.

After getting them, I was amazed that I could tell that they weigh a lot less.
I wore them on a run and I could definitely feel the difference and really like them.

Since they cost twice as much as the Trekz, I was hoping they would be worth it.

I think they are worth it.
Not sure if I will get a 2nd pair since I still have 2 pair of Trekz to help support my Aeropex.

Nathan EXODRAW 2.0 18OZ HANDHELD
I picked one of these up at a local running store to try out.
I have multiple water bladder/bottles but they are so long that it is hard to finish them and they flop around too much for me.
The Exodraw is a lot shorter than most so I wanted to give it a try.
It is way more expensive than the others I have gotten.

After using it, I really like it.

Nathan had a sale on their site and I decided to get 2 more so I could carry 2 at a time and have a spare for longer runs.

What I didn't realize when I ordered them was that I ended up with 2 EXODRAW 2.0 INSULATED 18OZ HANDHELD.
They have a different grip that I wanted to try.
They are longer but are easier in some ways to carry.
They also have a much bigger pocket to carry things.
Big enough to carry drink mixes, a Clif bar or a protein bar.

I like them but I also liked the short ones better for shorter runs.
The site still had a sale so I ordered 2 more of them.

Think I am definitely set for water bottles now.

TAILWIND
I have noticed on longer runs that I start to fade at about 15 miles.
However, after thinking about when I did my ultra, I didn't have the fade like I was seeing.
For the ultra, I had been taking breaks but also eating small portions of food.
Rice, Clif bar, eggs and cheese, or even a sunbutter burrito.

For the marathon, I would need to take in some calories to help with energy.
I have tried other energy/hydration drinks with sugar but they made me very gassy and gave me serious cramps.
I normally use Propel mixes but didn't have the calories to help keep me supported with fast energy.
I don't like doing things like pretzels or chips during the run.

I gave Tailwind a try and it doesn't seem to do the same thing as the other sugared drinks.
Really like the orange version.
The caffeine versions don't really add a lot of extra energy so not sure if it is worth getting those.
If I want caffeine, I can always add a crystal light citrus to the mix and not only get the boost but add more flavor.

I also have tried the Gu supplements and those seem to be ok.
Still experimenting with them.

Final piece of gear.

AGPTEK A16ST
I can stream blue tooth from my phone to my Aftershokz.
What I also wanted was a small mp3 player that could do the same but it had to support ebooks and remember where it left off after shutting down (many don't).

I really like this little player.
Not only does it have the blue tooth capability, it also has a speaker.
I can load up 16Gb on internal and 16Gb on a micro card for it to play music or audio books.

They make some other styles, but this one for sure works well.
And at $30 it was a great deal.
Not sure it is still available but they still make many others.

2 Years Later

2020 has been a pain in the butt.

I did do my Virtual Eagle Up Ultra.
I only finished 56 miles of my goal of 62.
I did have to take some time inside not moving due to a storm that came thru.
While I can run in the rain, running in the rain at night with high winds and lightning isn't something I am going to do unless I absolutely have to.
I am very proud of what I accomplished and am looking forward to next year.
Thinking I will change up and maybe help support a team run.

At this point, I only have 4 potential physical races this year.
Still training for the marathon at the end of Aug.

Tomorrow I will be going up to do the Chasing Bigfoot 25k.

The first weekend of Aug, I will be going up to help my brother support a friend doing doing the Badger 100. I am not good enough to pace our friend like my brother but I will take the time to do my last long run before the marathon.

The last weekend of Aug will either be the Fargo Marathon in Fargo or me doing the marathon distance during the Bigfoot 75k. I am waiting thru tomorrow to see if the Fargo marathon will publish any safety plans for the race. If they don't, I will switch to a virtual version of it.

My final races of the year will be the I35 challenge races in Kansas City and Des Moines near the end of Oct. That will be a half marathon on both Saturday and Sunday.

After I finish the marathon distance at the end of Aug, I will be switching up my training to do more weight lifting and functional fitness. I will have to keep running for the half marathons but I won't have to do the same longer distance I do for the marathon.

Who knows what next year will bring.
I would like to do some OCR races to test out my bodies capabilities.
I am also probably not going to do many races longer than 10k but I do want to work on my speed and the amount of time I can run between walks using my Galloway method.

So it has been 2 years from my WLS.
I am fairly steady in my weight.
It varies by a couple pounds but I don't worry about that.
185-190 seems to be where I am holding.
We will see how it changes once I start doing more weight lifting.
Since I am more concerned with my shape, conditioning, and fitness, I honestly don't care about the weight itself as long as I don't seem to be gaining more body fat.

I don't really plan on doing many more pictures.
Maybe next year on my 3 year anniversary.
I will maybe do more if my body shape changes as I change up my work out.

Took pictures and measurements 2 years post surgery.
I also combined pictures into a comparison from the start, to about a year later and finally now.

I am going to change my blog heading up a bit.
Most of it isn't me anymore.
I will still try to blog as I change up my workouts and try new things.

2020: What A Ride

2020 has been a wild ride.

So many plans to be accomplished and so many not able to be done.

The first part of the year was doing recovery from my Abdominoplasty and Panniculectomy.

That actually went well and I was able to still keep walking soon after.

The doctors were happy with the progress and other than a single spot that is still needing to be oiled right by the belly button, all the scars are healed well and with minimal long term issues.

Right on top of the new location for the belly button keeps getting flaky and I still have to put something on it or it become irritated and acts almost like an infection.

I was still walking in February when I had my first event scheduled.

At that time COVID-19 hadn’t become a major issue yet and so we all went to it.

It was a 5K and I jokingly called it a -5K since it was well below 0ยบ when we stepped off to start it.

I carried my ruck and a flag for this since I wasn’t running anyway.

It was interesting to chat with people during the event.

So my list of events I was signed up for and their current status:

  • 20200208 - Valentine's Day TC 5K (done)
  • 20200321 - Hot Dash 5K & 10 Mile (done)
  • 20200509 - Fargo Go For Challenge, 5K & Marathon (postponed to 20200829)
  • 20200608 - Eagle Up Ultra - 100K or 50K/50Mi (canceled)(did my own virtual)
  • 20200704 - Red, White & Boom! TC Half Marathon (canceled)

  • 20200816 - Ragnar Road MN (canceled)
  • 20200918 - Ragnar Relay Trail WI (pending)
  • 20201004 - TC 10Miler (pending)
  • 20201017 - Kansas City Marathon presented by Garmin (pending)
  • 20201018 - IMT Des Moines Marathon (pending)

My new list of upcoming events:

  • 20200725 - Chasing Bigfoot 25K
  • 20200829 - Fargo Go For Challenge, 5K & Marathon
  • 20200918 - Ragnar Relay Trail WI
  • 20201004 - TC 10Miler (still waiting for registration for this)
  • 20201017 - Kansas City Marathon presented by Garmin
  • 20201018 - IMT Des Moines Marathon

Since I couldn’t do the Eagle Up Ultra, I did one based from home and tested myself to see what I could do in 24 hours.

While I had a goal of 100K, I didn’t quite make it.

I did make 91K so am really happy with that.

Couple of issues during the event and doing a long hill on each loop really smoked my legs.

I think if I had been at the real one, I would have made it with no issues.

Overall I am extremely proud of what I did and since it got into the papers, people got to read about veteran suicide and PTSD.

I even got some donations in my name for it.

Currently I have reset every running Personal Best/Personal Record I have.

The marathon one was during my virtual Eagle Up so I am not sure that is truly accurate and I might delete it since it might be from a longer run and have pauses during the run which means it really wasn’t a true marathon.

I am going to leave it for now since I am not sure and knowing it will be overwritten in August when I do the Fargo Marathon.

I have started my doctor appointments for my 2 year post surgery follow up.

So far I have done all the blood work and had my dietitian appointment.

All of my blood work is in the normal range except my hemoglobin.

It is still low and after talking to the dietitian, I have a tweak to my vitamin regimen to see if that helps.

We shall see how it goes.

I have 2 concerns with it, 1 is that it could signify anemia and 2 is that I can’t donate blood any more.

Doctor doesn’t think it is anemia but it is something I have to keep an eye on.

None of the other blood type checks show anemia so it is low on the concern level for now.

I think that is it for now.

This whole COVID thing kind of threw me off my game for a bit and I knew I should blog but just didn’t feel like it.

I was posting on FB a lot and I might go back and summarize those posts here at some point.

I do want to take the time to thank Elsolel for all of her support with my crazy recovery and time I have spent doing things.
